"When are you speaking to Haim?" a text arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the best groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos often show them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to make music."

"Therefore everyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The band are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes detail endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international fan base.

However Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
