New research indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these drugs should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
